Automotive Diagnostics and Repair

VW's have special fluid requirements. Be sure to use engine oil that carries VW approval. Rods & Rides uses Castrol 5w40 synthetic. The same oil the dealers use.

Vw power steering fluid is different than other power steering fluids. For best operation, do not add unapproved fluids.

Vw automatic transmissions do not have a dipstick to check or add fluid. In addition, the fluid is of a special type. A Vw diagnostic tool is required to properly check or add fluid to your transmission.

Antifreeze in your Vw is also of a different type. Always make sure the proper type is used when servicing your vehicle.

The most important major service your Vw will need, is timing belt and water pump replacement. Depending on what engine your Vw has, replacement should be at 60,000 miles for TDI, or between 70,000 and 80,000 miles for 1.8 and 2.0 engines. Our experience is that exceeding this may result in major engine damage. The Vw water pump uses a plastic impeller which is prone to breakage in as little as 50,000 miles. At Rods & Rides, we replace the plastic impeller pump with a metal impeller pump, that will not break.

Protect your investment and make sure this major service is completed on time.
